It's 6.30am on a wet miserable Sunday morning and we are woken by the general thumping about of 5 over enthusiastic kids.
It's October 5th and it is the annual Land Rover London to Brighton Run!! Not only is it the 10th anniversary of the run, but the South London and Surrey Land Rover Club, who run the event, are sponsoring our event at the Fairfield Halls in aid of the 'Children With Leukaemia'.
After a general mad rush, we leave the kitchen looking like a nice day in Beirut. There is remnants of Rice Krispies, Frosties and various forms of toast everywhere as we load the hoards into the trusty Discovery and off we go!!
We pick up the main pack at Hooley (most started at Crystal Palace) but there is immediate confusion as half of them head down the M23 and the rest are off down the A23.
We choose the A23 and are soon behind some idiot who insists on driving his Discovery through any puddles with total disregard for any public who may be in the way! We are all getting cross with this bloke and we overtake and carry on to Brighton.
We are stopped at the gate by Brian who is soaked to the skin. There are hundreds of all variations of Land Rovers lined up along the sea front. there are trade stands and flags but the rain is relentless! within 5 minutes of being out of the car, we are all soaked through. We all soldier on though and due to the weather the presentations of the cups and the donation ceremony are brought forward to 2 o’clock.
Yours truly has to hand over the 'Best Range Rover' cup as LRR Range Rovers sponsor this cup. About 20 minutes later they announce that this years donation will be going to the 'David Mitchell Fund' for Children With Leukaemia'. David and I say a few words of thanks to everyone. It faded out from there really as everyone started making their way home.
A quick half hour on the pier for the kids and £30 lighter, we head home in the pouring rain. Soaked, tired but it was worth it!!
Our sincere thanks to the South London and Surrey land Rover Club and to Brian and Sophie for all their help!!
Good day out
Phil
